Noise! That's what this DVD is all about...
Serious chugging metal rhythm guitar kind of noise. The kind of noise that slams you in the stomach and makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!
Andy James is our teacher and begins by arming us with the basic skills required for some serious metal rhythm carnage - including palm muting, accented chords, hammer ons, pull offs, left hand mutings, strumming techniques etc. etc.
But - the techniques training isn't limited to the introductory section. Throughout the DVD Andy throws in a lot more ideas on how to play and perform, plus some handy ideas for achieving a more polished sound.
Once we are tooled up with enough basics to cause some serious ear damage, the DVD then takes us through a series of three performances. Beginning with a basic slower but still nice, heavy sounding intro track through intermediate level to a pretty challenging advanced track.
Each performance is broken down into riffs with the instructor isolating and demonstrating how to play each in turn. The tracks have been structured to include real examples of the guitar techniques covered in the intro. These provide a nice illustration plus giving you some real experience in how to apply the techniques
The analysis of the tracks is structured into nice, digestible chunks which make the tracks easy to digest and learn, but also teaches you how to structure metal tunes should you fancy writing some of your own.
Once you have finished the performance break downs on the DVD, you can jam along with them at full speed with the performance section found later in the DVD
The DVD is well structured with a focus on both left and right hand techniques, helped out by a nice inset screen which allows us to see the right hand in action at the same time as the left.
Overall this is a really good DVD for learning metal guitar. Although it starts with the absolute basics, the pace certainly picks up, the example performances get quite challenging so there's certainly plenty to keep even the most ambitious metal head busy.
If you want to learn the rhythm guitar techniques and skills which are the
essential building blocks of most metal genres, this DVD is highly recommended.
