Despite it 80's cheesiness Crossroads is a great film. It's kind of road movie meets Karate Kid for Guitar players. In fact it's even got the Karate Kid in it! Well not the Karate Kid (he doesn't exist) but the same actor - anyway...
The story is about a pampered middle class white boy who despite attending music school to learn classical guitar has a real thirst for delta blues guitar. Yes you guessed it the opportunities for him to be told "you can't play the blues" etc. etc;. are endless, but he's undeterred
His investigations into the blues cause him to stumble across aged blues harmonica player Willie Brown, who despite his senior years is a damn site sharper than our guitar playing "Daniel-San".
Willie manages to talk the wannabe guitar prodigy into breaking him out of the secure old folks home he is incarcerated in to take him back to the delta
"Why?" you ask, well obviously, like all good blues players he's sold his soul to the devil and considering his senior years he obviously perceives a need to recapture that particular vehicle for future use. Aside from this can you imagine anything worse than a high security old folks home?
The result is a good little road movies with some action and adventure interspersed with some good blues guitar playing, courtesy of Ry Cooder and inevitably the real bluesman endlessly insulting the young hopeful with comments about his poncey guitar playing
The Grand Finale is again reminiscent of the Karate Kid (remember that Crane kick?) but I won't give it away
All in all if you like a road movie and some blues music and can tolerate the 80's fashion nightmares then this is well worth a go if you've got a spare Friday night and a few cold ones. Failing that if you are a true guitar trainspotter you need to see it anyway.
Oh and don't forget you can rent DVDs as well as buy them check out:
