Heartwork by Carcass
is an excellent album from the Godfathers of Grindgore - Carcass. Frantically heavy, with a huge sound and some excellent guitar work.
As you would expect by the genre and the name of the band this probably isn't the sort of music you would listen to over dinner, but if you like seriously heavy sound, with unique guitar talent, this is a fantastic album.
Famed as the founders of splatter horror grindcore metal, this album represents a maturation and departure from their earlier style in both lyrics and sound.
The lyrics contain less of the earlier stomach churning content and offers more commentary on humanity and society, although delivered in their own unique style.
The music moves away from their usual grindcore sound to a more cleaner metal style, although very hard edged and heavy.
In fact it's such a departure that, as mentioned on the video, some of the fans described the album as a sell out, I would disagree and say this is a move forward, in style and talent, it's just a brilliant album.
The main thing I love about this album is the guitar work, the rhythm guitar by Bill Steer is seriously heavy, down tuned chugging carnage, which makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
Accompanying Bill Steer on Lead guitar is one of my favorite guitarists Micheal Amott now of the band Arch Enemy, and they do some great work - lifting the sound of the record with some great leads.
The cover art is a Sculpture by H.R Giger, called "Life Support 1993".
This album actually is a re-release by Earache Records, to mark the bands return to touring last year.
As well as the original CD, the album also contains a couple of bonuses.
Firstly it contains the original demo CD, which is great as the songs have a nice raw edge whilst still showing the talent seen in the main disk.
Also there is a DVD containing interviews with the band members on a number of themes.
So to sum up, this is an excellent album, seriously heavy and charged with energy, I haven't stopped listening to it since I got it, highly recommended.
As a sample, below is the video for the title track - Heartwork.
